Fall & Winter Reading list
Our book listing suggestion for this fall/winter includes three novels: The lessons by Ian McEwan, The Promise by Damon Galgut, and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Besides these there will be also a discussion on literature Nobel Prize winner Jon Fosse's literary work and book Aliss at the Fire.
In his novel The Lessons, British author Ian McEwan presents the lifelong story of an English man marked by defining historical changes and complex love relationships. Beginning from his childhood as a young student at a boy's boarding school in the 1960's going through his adulthood up to his elderly years, McEwan's untangles his main character's portrait as far from a strong type that could be called a hero, but yet ended up captivating the reader with his kind attitude towards life's challenges and his relationships with those people who play important roles in his life.
South African author Damon Galgut brings to his novel The Promise an inside and close picture of an emotionally disconnected white family living on a vast piece of land they owe and allow a long serving black servants family to live in poverty and miserable conditions. Galgut describes the fate of each character of the family since their childhood during the Apartheid years until their adulthood during the time of Mandela's government.
Delia Owens' Where the Crawdads Sing it's a melancholic and murder mystery story about a little girl that learned against all odds to grow up all by herself in a marsh in a fictional North Carolina coastal small community when her family abandoned her. The story goes back and forth between the main character's early childhood and teenager years in the 1950's early 1960's, and the present time of her adult year in 1969-70 when she faces a trial for murder. The novel unfolds as it unveils to readers how the marsh girl survived and coped with living a life of her own.

It's February and we are celebrating Black History Month
Here are two excellent suggestions for reading and music fans.
The autobiography 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup tells the author despair as he a violin player from northern New York is lured to go to Washington D.C. for a performance where he is kidnapped and sold as a slave in 1841. A touching and heartfelt story that reminds us all that slavery should never be put aside of our history and teach us to reject and not tolerate any kind of human abuse. The movies version misses a lot of details and the fails to transmit the author own personal feelings during the 12 years he endured under captivity and exploitation. A much recommended reading.
In the early 20th century new music styles began to shape the history of jazz and a great music Master was among one of the first big names to contributed to that legacy. Composer Scott Joplin wrote some of the first American popular music hits ranging from Rags, to Waltzes, Cakewalk, Songs and even Opera, as he helped define the some of the early sounds of American culture. Listening suggestion: The Maple Leaf Rag and Little Black Baby by Scott Joplin.

Our book list for this summer!
The book Afterlives by Abdulrazak Gurnah, first African author to win a Nobel Prize in Literature, offers a close look into the history of Sub-Saharan and East Africa during German and British colonization in the first half of the 20th century. The novel evolves around the fate of the ashkaris (a Swahili-Arabic word used to refer to local soldiers serving in the Schutztruppe of the German colonial army) as it portraits the separate lives and destiny of two young African men who joined the colonial army and whose paths find common ground with unexpected family ties. A glimpse at the cruel reality of colonial exploitation in Africa from the perspective of native Africans.
Klara and the Sun by Katzuo Ishiguro is a sci fi novel featuring an AF (artificial friend) named Klara programmed to serve as a robot companion for an ailing teenage girl. Klara develops an emotional attachment to the girl and to those surrounding her as she reaches to the sun as a metaphoric image of god and life to plea for the well being of her human friend. A heart warming take on the meaning of love in human nature and relationships.
In his novel Crossroads, book author Jonathan Franzen describes a family's generational conflict in the 1970's. Personal and societal turmoil shape this Midwestern family drama questioning religious views and life choices.

Celebrating the Music of Astor Piazzolla
Born in 1921 in Argentine, Astor Piazzolla would be turning 100 years old this year. The music of the legendary tango musician continues to carry on his legacy as the creator of the Nuevo Tango. As a child, Piazzolla had piano lessons and played the bandoneon. His career started early when he was still a teenager then hired as a bandoneon player by a traditional tango orchestra. In Buenos Aires Piazzolla studied composition with Alberto Ginastera, and he continued his training later in Paris with composer Nadia Boulanger, who encouraged him to follow his passion for the tango. Piazzolla's music is unique, therefore his musical path lead him towards a very unique style. His music evolved as he himself paved the way to an innovative tango that blends classical, jazz, and virtuoso music. Piazzolla's music constitutes a passionate statement about his heart felt connection with the Argentine tango.
The documentary 'Astor Piazzolla: The Years of the Shark' released in 2019 presents first hand photos, videos and audio recordings from Piazzolla's family private archives. It shows a very intimate side of his life and career as he talks to his daughter in a series of one on one interviews. Piazzolla's large music repertoire includes solo, ensemble, orchestra, and film music.
These are some of Piazzolla's live performances with three of his most beloved works: Adios Nonino , Libertango and Milonga del Angel.

Summer reading suggestion: 'Der Gesang der Fledermäuse' by Olga Torkaczuk
In this crime-thriller the literature Nobel Prize winner Olga Torkaczuk tells the story of a series of mysterious deaths that begin to puzzle a small resort community on Poland and Czech Republic's border. The victims are part of a group of local hunters. Janina, an old lady who teaches English in the local school and cares for vacant houses during the tourist off-season, is getting ready to sleep in a cold winter night, preparing herself to meet her fate of dying alone as usual, when she hears her neighbor's dog barking. She gets to her neighbor's house and discovers his body. From there on, new mysterious deaths and characters begin to appear in the story, and Janina's new friends help solving the crime mystery and consequently transform her life.
A clever, emotional, well written and reflective book, this thriller by Torkaczuk questions the hunting practices and regulations in eastern Europe and the cruel reality of those facing the odds of aging alone.
